The Coocamu cooperative is located in the Rutsiro district in the Western province sector of Musasa. It was founded in 2013 and they supply fair trade certified coffee. The only way to get to Coocamu is by taking a 45 minute boat ride across lake Kivu from Kibuye. Before the cooperative existed, people would process their coffee at home. They had to deal with strangers who would arrive by boat in the middle of the night only to break in and steal their coffee. It would be impossible to track down the culprits. One of the cooperative's major achievements has been to end this awful situation. Now members store their coffee in a secure warehouse and farmers no longer feel threatened by the violence and robbery. This, in addition to improvements on infrastructure have made coffee production a lot easier for the members of the cooperative.
